Birding in Rajasthan, India Tour


Duration : 10 nights and 11 days.
Itinerary:Abu, Kumbhalgarh, Jodhpur, Thar Desert and Jaisalmer.
Best Tour Season:Between October and March.


Day 0 1: Delhi-Abu Road
Arrive in New Delhi and spend the whole day until evening birding along Delhi-Abu Road. Spare some time to visit Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary for a memorable birding experience. Proceed to the train station in the evening to catch an overnight train to Abu Road. The train departs at 1955 hours and you will spend the night on board in an air-conditioned compartment


Day 02: Ajmer-Abu
You will arrive in Abu at around 0625 hours where you will be met and transferred to a hotel. You will need to walk around birding for the opportunity to view such birds as the White-naped tit, Marshall’s iora, the green avadavat and other scrubland birds. You will need to go back to your hotel room for the night.


Day 03: Abu-Kumbhalgarh
Spend morning hours birding along Abu Road before taking a 3-hour drive in the afternoon to Kumbhalgarh while birding along the way. Arrive in Kumbhalgarh in the evening for the night.


Day 04: Kumbhalgarh
You will be accompanied for birding in and around Fort Kumbhalgarh for a golden opportunity to site such birds as the short-toed eagle, the jungle bush quail, Indian pitta, the common rosefinch, the crested bunting and the thick-billed flowerpecker. You will spend the night in Kumbhalgarh.


Day 05: Kumbhalgarh-Jodhpur
Spend the morning hours birding in and around Kumbhalgarh before driving to Jodhpur. Make sure to have several stops a long the way for another memorable birding experience. Arrive in Jodhpur in the evening for the night.


Day 06: Jodhpur – Kheechan – Jaisalmer
Drive from Jodhpur to Jaisalmar in the morning. Make sure to stop at Kheechan for another golden opportunity to site a huge congregation of demoiselle cranes other different bird species. You will need to be prepared to drive across a dry scrub desert. Arrive in Jaisalmer in the evening for overnight stay at a hotel.


Day 07: Jaisalmer
Spend a small part of the morning birding around Lake Gadisar, which is very rich in waterbirds. You also have the option of applying for entry permit to enter Desert National Park at the District Magistrate’s Office. You need to present yourself in person to you lodge the application.You also have the option of birding around Jaisalmer if you do not wish to enter the park. You will have the opportunity to site such birds as the variable desert wheater, the common kestrel, shrikra, Isabelline and the chestnut-bellied sandgrouse. Return to your hotel room for the night.


Day 08: Jaisalmer
Spare the whole day for a memorable excursion to Khuri Village where you will also have a wonderful birding experience. Look out for the common raven, the black-crowned sparrow lark, orphean and desert warblers and house bunters among other species of birds. Return to your hotel room in the evening for the night.


Day 09: Desert National Park
Make an application to enter Desert National Park where you will need to spend the whole day birding. You also need to be prepared for an extra ordinary night in a camp set up in sand dunes within the park. Your birding tour of the park will expose you to such birds as trumpeter finch, the Great Indian Bustard, the cream-colored courser, and Stoliczkas bushcat among many other bird species.


Day 10: Desert National Park
Spend the better part of the morning birding within the park. Start your journey back to Jaisalmer to arrive in the evening for the night in your hotel.


Day 11: Jaisalmer – Jodhpur
Spend the better part of the morning birding within Fossil Park. Depart from Jaisalmer in the afternoon to travel back to Jodhpur to catch an overnight train late in the evening to Delhi to end your birding tour.

Note that you may choose to extend your birding tour of which you have two options.

  • The first option is to extend your tour to cover Ranthambhor and Bharatpur or a full birding tour of Northern India.
  • The second option is extend your birding tour to Little Rann of Kutch and Gir National Park or a full birding tour in Gujarat.
